You are driven to advance science and speed time to discovery. More than ever before, computational power is at your fingertips – and with great power comes great responsibility. Take advantage of the GPU Hackathons and Bootcamps to build the hands-on skills needed to leverage the next-generation computing systems that will help you to advance your scientific discoveries.

GPU Hackathons and Bootcamps are open to all—whether you’re a seasoned researcher or novice programmer, we want you to be here. Be prepared to learn, brainstorm, and build amazing real-world skills. Throughout the events, we’ll provide the support and tools participants need to learn the foundations of GPU programming and how to use various tools for development.
Participating in a GPU hackathon or bootcamp provides a unique opportunity for teams to jumpstart acceleration or optimization of their code on GPUs, with OpenACC or any other preferred tools. With the help of two experienced mentors, each team should be able to significantly accelerate their code or know which steps to take next to continue work by the end of the event.
GPUs have thousands of compute cores and are proven to be powerful accelerators for parallel codes. Scientists and researchers can see 2-10x performance increases while using GPUs for their applications. There are a variety of programming models and tools available to help domain experts to port their scientific codes to GPUs and we encourage you to explore and discover the best options to suit your needs.
No previous experience with OpenACC directives or GPU programming in general is required; however, programming experience with C, C++, or Fortran is desirable. Exposure to parallel programming methodologies is also helpful. We encourage you to become familiar with at least OpenACC so that you can use your time at the hackathon more efficiently. A free OpenACC Online Course is available to everyone on

If your code is over 100,000 lines, please select and extract a stand-alone representative kernel from the original application to start working with at the event. This will concentrate your time and effort for maximum results.
Generally, GPU Hackathons are collaborations and not competitions. The only prizes offered are new levels of performance for your code, time with experts, ability to run on supercomputers and unforgettable experience that might bring you closer to a new paper or talk. For GPU Bootcamps, we do award small nominal prizes from time to time at the discretion of the organizers.
GPU Hackathons and Bootcamps are free for all admitted participants. We’ll have WiFi, food, workshops, and awesome swag to share for the time you’ll be with us.
The hacker ethos is all about teamwork. For GPU Hackathons, you must apply for the event with a team that is knowledgeable about the code you are planning to work on during the 5 days. For GPU Bootcamps, if you don’t have teammates, we’ll assign you to a team where you can meet your new best friends. 3-5 people per team is the limit.
Accepted identification (i.e. valid state-issued drivers license or passport), laptop and charger, and your enthusiasm to learn new skills and meet new people.
Photographs, screenshots or recordings of presentations and Participants may be taken during the OpenACC GPU Hackathons and be later published in various media by Organizer or Venue, without payment or other consideration to Participants, to share information pertaining to the OpenACC GPU Hackathons.
